About me

I’m a high school student at The Governor’s Academy balancing AP and honors courses with team sports of basketball and golf, several leadership positions, and volunteer work. I created this blog to share my passion for all things related to environmental and marine science with a focus on the ocean and its beautiful creatures.

One of my biggest passions is the ocean, and experiences both in and out of school have deepened this interest. I volunteered at the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center, a 20-acre coastal preserve, and I also worked as a camp counselor at John D. MacArthur State Park, supervising children’s activities and scientific experiments across a 436-acre coastal habitat on a barrier island. At my high school, we have an amazing coastal research center called the Alfond Center & Bass Institute, which was designed in partnership with scientists from the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. This was my main reason for attending this school. The center has an aquatic laboratory on the banks of the Parker River, fed by water drawn from there. This past year, I was the only student selected to lead an independent research study. I built a tank with filtration and performed coral husbandry for the corals we received from scientists at Woods Hole. My corals are currently summering at the Seacoast Science Center, and next year I will be designing and conducting research on Astrangia coral. You can read more about this in my blog. Outside of school, I am in my second year with Blue Ocean Society for Marine Conservation at the Discovery Center on Hampton Beach in New Hampshire. Last year, I volunteered, and this year I was the only high schooler offered a position; most of the employees are college students or professional scientists. I perform a variety of duties, but my favorite by far is running the touch tank and educating children!
